US oil consumption has dropped!

I didn't realize how we've changed oil consumption in the US. The article below gives a good description about oil use. It appears most of the change was in the transportation sector. Part of the reason is the better fuel mileage that most cars get now.

So why are so many articles I read are saying the US isn't changing it's oil use? According to the article below we're doing much better than some other countries.

What have you read?

Petroleum consumption in the US was lower in 2014 than it was in 1997, despite the fact that the economy grew almost 50% over this period. As illustrated in Figure 1, consumption rose steadily from 1984 through the early 2000s, peaking in 2004 before decreasing in conjunction with rising oil prices.
