80 Years Ago Today

80 years ago today, Germany invaded Poland from the west, and The USSR invaded Poland from the east.
It is considered to be the official start of the Second World War in Europe. Ironically, at that point Germany and the USSR (Russia) were allies against Poland. In June 1941 that alliance came to an end when Germany invaded Russia. Russia changed sides and became an ally of Britain and France, and later the USA.

Many historians consider WWII to have actually started in 1937 when the Japanese attacked China, some think it began on 1931 when the Japanese invaded Manchuria, but those events were "under the radar" of the popular western press of the day.
